Apr 3, 2010

Canfield, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team fell to 6-19 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League after dropping a pair of league contests to Butler, 6-0, and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park.

The Bulldogs improved to 26-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.

In the opener, Youngstown State's Cheryl Cale and Butler Jenny Esparza battled in a classic pitcher's duel for five innings. Cale had allowed just three hits and struck out five while Esparza only allowed two hits.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs finally figured out Cale and used a four-run inning to break open the game.

The Bulldogs added two more in the seventh inning and Esparza picked up her 12th win of the season allowing just three hits and struck out 12.

In the second game, the Bulldogs pounded out 12 hits in just five innings and Jennifer Chasteen and Breanna Fisher combined for a two-hit shutout with four strikeouts.

The Penguins and Bulldogs conclude the series Sunday at Noon at McCune Park.
