The Hively Family has based their principles on hard work, honesty, integrity, family, making a difference and providing a solid foundation for others throughout the Mahoning Valley and at Youngstown State University. For their efforts they are being honored as the 2018 Penguins of the Year.

Dedicated Penguin fans, they have given generously to many on-campus initiatives including the Andrews Student Recreation & Wellness Center, the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) and the future Don Constantini Multimedia Center, among many others. On gamedays they can be heard in the hallways of the Scholarship Loge complex at Stambaugh Stadium as they support the Penguins, and, have a good time doing so.

A family owned and operated business, The Hively Construction Company was founded in April 1986, by Lee R. Hively, Jr.

Lee Hively had spent a good portion of his life preparing to own his own construction business. At 10 years old he started working on a local farm. A lifelong resident of Canfield, he graduated from Canfield High School in 1969. When he was 19, he started working for a local contractor and in 1974, earned his degree from Youngstown State in Business Administration. He worked as a laborer in the field for nine years serving as Foreman and Job Superintendent before getting involved in the Estimating and Project Management aspect of construction. Then, in 1986, he began Hively Construction.

He is a past president of the Youngstown Shrine Club (2002) and is still a very active member. He was a member of the board for the Erie Hospital for Burned and Crippled Children, a member of the Builder’s Association, The Chamber of Commerce, The Canfield Conservation Club, the Jesters, Al Koran, The Penguin Club, The Ice Castle Scholarship Fund and is a huge supporter of the Canfield and Western Reserve Local Schools. Hively and his wife, Diana, are also an active member at the Canfield United Methodist Church. He has been a member of the Penguin Club for more than 20 years.

Lee and his wife, Diana, were married in 1982. They have five children and 11 grandchildren. He considers himself very fortunate that four of his five children are working alongside him. Rob, Becky, Ryan and Danielle have played a part in the family business. He has a daughter, Krystle, who owns her own business in Florida.

He owns a 250-acre farm where he enjoys tending to his more than 1,000 fruit trees and sharing his crops. Also, the Family enjoys all the recreational activities the farm has to offer.

Lee and his four siblings, two sisters – Deb and Lavern and two brothers – Hugh and Fred, grew up with very supportive parents. In fact, his father, Lee, gave him the initial loan to start the company more than 30 years ago. Hugh has been a part of Hively Construction since 1986.
