We have been privileged to enjoy a tremendous amount of success on the playing fields and in the classroom from our four football national championships and numerous conference crowns to our many Academic All-American and All-District honorees. Over the last six academic years, we have won 30 Horizon League championships and finished in the top five of the McCafferty Trophy (the Horizon League’s all-sports award) standings each year.
Academically, the Penguins have posted the program’s top four semester grade point-averages over the last four semesters. YSU student-athletes set a school record with a 3.39 GPA at the end of the Spring 2020 semester and 104 student-athletes recorded a 4.00 during the semester. The Penguins finished the spring semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.26, the highest in the department's history. During the semester, 307 of 402 student-athletes (76 percent) had a GPA of 3.00 or above. The 307 student-athletes and the percentage set department bests. Of the 307, 295 own a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above through their spring course work.
YSU Athletics is committed to ensuring our student-athletes understand that being a collegiate student-athlete is both a privilege as well as great opportunity and giving back to the community is an important education tool we use to demonstrate that philosophy. Our students and staff annually participate in over 100 community events, serving over 10,000 patrons.
