The Youngstown State baseball program has been recognized as a recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2018-19 academic year.
The award honors high school and collegiate programs coached by ABCA members that post a grade point average (GPA) over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year. YSU was one of 53 NCAA Division I programs and the only member of the Horizon League to be honored.
The Penguins have now earned the impressive academic distinction each of the last two seasons. YSU was one of 46 Division I programs and the only Horizon League member recognized in 2017-18.
YSU's 3.23 cumulative GPA at the end of the spring 2019 semester was the second-highest of any men's team on campus. The Penguins had 24 players maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above in the fall while 21 players did so in the spring. Senior pitcher and outfielder Zack Lopatka was named to the 2019 Horizon League All-Academic Team.
YSU has had at least one player earn Horizon League All-Academic recognition in each of Dan Bertolini's three seasons as head coach.
Youngstown State will play an exhibition contest at Pitt this Saturday. First pitch at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh is set for 6 p.m., and admission for fans will be free.
