Record-Setting Campaign Highlights Men's Basketball Season

The Youngstown State men's basketball team recently concluded one of the most successful seasons in the program's Division I history. The Penguins finished the season with an overall record of 19-15 and set the program record for most conference wins with 12.

The 19 wins are a school record for wins as members of the Horizon League and the most since the 2000-01 season. Youngstown State also tied the school's Division I record for most home wins with 13, which was set in 2019-20.

For just the third time in YSU's Division I history and the second time in the last two seasons, the Penguins accepted a berth to a postseason tournament. The Penguins played in the inaugural The Basketball Classic in 2022.

Below is a list of team and individual accomplishments from the 2021-22 season:

  • The Penguins 19 wins overall are the most since 2000-01 and the most as a member of the Horizon League.
  • YSU posted its third straight winning season, the first time that occurred since 1982-85.
  • The Penguins recorded the second most wins in their D-I history.
  • The 12 Horizon League wins set program mark for conference wins.
  • YSU's 52 wins over the last three years are the most since most since 1982-85.
  • The Penguins tied Division I record for home wins (13).
  • YSU set the school record with a .761 free-throw percentage.
  • The Penguins scored 2,470 points and averaged 72.6 points per game. The total points are the second most in a season in program history.
  • Youngstown State made 256 3-pointers in 2021-22, which rank fourth on the all-time list.
  • YSU earned its second postseason berth in three years after accepting a bid to play in The Basketball Classic.
  • The Penguins won their first postseason game in nine years after defeating Morgan State, 70-65, in the first round of The Basketball Classic.
  • The Penguins placed two players on the All-Horizon League teams for the first time, and 2021-22 marked the first year with multiple all-league performers since 2000-01.
  • Senior Michael Akuchie was named to the All-Horizon League Second-Team while junior Dwayne Cohill earned third-team all-league honors.
  • Cohill led the Penguins in scoring with 508 points for an average of 14.9 points per game. He finished third in the league with a .835 free-throw percentage and 10th in the league in scoring.
  • Cohill's 508 points rank 11th on the YSU Division I scoring list and are the most since Cameron Morse scored a D-I record 711 in 2016-17.
  • Akuchie finished the season with 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, which ranked 14th and third in the league, respectively. Akuchie also ranked fourth in the league with a free-throw percentage of .826.
  • Akuchie and Shemar Rathan-Mayes were named to Horizon League All-Academic Team this season, marking the first time since 2012-13 that the Penguins place two members on the team.
  • YSU also posted a program-best 3.40 grade-point average in the 2021 fall semester.
