Softball Set to Visit Green Bay For Three-Game Horizon League Series

The Youngstown State softball team looks to return to its winning ways as it gears up for an important three-game series against Horizon League foe Green Bay, April 5-6, in Green Bay, Wis. First pitch is slated for Saturday at 5 p.m. EDT.

The Penguins and Phoenix will play a single game on Saturday followed by a doubleheader Sunday starting a 1 p.m. EDT.

The Penguins and Phoenix have met 38 times previously and Green Bay owns a 24-14 lead in the all-time series. Last year, however, the Penguins won the season series by defeating the Phoenix, 4-2 and 7-6. The Penguins dropped a 2-1 decision to the Phoenix as well.

The Penguins are coming off a pair of losses to Robert Morris, 6-1, 6-4, on April 2. Senior Sarah Ingalls went 3-for-6 on the day with a home run, double and two RBIs. It was Ingalls' fourth home run of the season and the 12th of her career.

Senior Courtney Ewing extended her hitting streak to 16 games after collecting a single in each contest against Robert Morris. Ewing is batting .400 (22-for-55) during that span.

Sophomore Miranda Castiglione leads the Horizon League with 36 hits and owns a team-best batting average of .396. Castiglione leads the Penguins with 28 runs scored, five home runs and a .637 slugging percentage.

Senior pitcher Casey Crozier, the school's all-time wins and strikeout leader, is 9-4 with a 2.33 earned-run average. Crozier has 50 career victories and 465 career strikeouts. She needs just 35 more to become the first YSU pitcher to strikeout 500 batters.

Junior Kayla Haslett has given the Penguins an offensive spark recently. In the last four games, Haslett is batting .500 (5-for-10) with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs.

Green Bay enters the the weekend with a 12-6 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the Horizon League.  Marissa Michalkiewic leads the Phoenix with a .400 batting averge, four doubles, three triples, three home runs and 21 RBIs. She also has a slugging percentage of .717.

Leading the Phoenix pitching staff is Briana Cavin with a 4-0 record and a 1.77 earned-run average. Ashley Nanneman is 3-3 with a 2.24 earned-run average.
