Softball Drops 6-2 Decision to UIC

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to Horizon League leader UIC on Friday night at the Covelli Sports Complex.

With the loss the Penguins fall to 22-25 overall and 10-7 in hthe Hoirozn League while the Flames improve to 26-20 overall and 16-3 in the league.

Sophomore Nikki Saibene went 2-for-3 while freshman Grace Cea went 1-for-3 with a double and Lexi Zappitelli had a two-run triple.

The Flames scored an unearned run in the top of the first and added another in the top of the third before exploding for three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

UIC's Claire Crane hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to extend the advantage to 6-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Zappitelli laced a two-run triple to left-center that plated Yazmine Romero and Dani Dadig for the Penguins' lone run.

The Penguins and Flames conclude the series with a doubleheader, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
