The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams return to the track on Friday afternoon when a select group of Penguins head south to compete at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational. The rest of the Penguins will compete on Saturday at either the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic or Westminster Invitational.
YSU athletes will begin competition from the Hurricane Invitational on Friday at 12 p.m. with the men's javelin throw. Saturday's events will get underway at 2 p.m. with the men's discus throw, running events begin at 2:30 with the 3000m steeplechase.
The Bison Outdoor Classic kicks off on Saturday with the men's javelin at 1:00 p.m. while the running events get started at 2:00 p.m. with the women's 1500m run. The Westminster Invitational gets underway at 10:00 a.m. with the 10000m run.
The Penguins are coming off a successful weekend at the Northeast Ohio Quad which featured wins in six events, a school record and a facility record. Alan Burns set the Farmers National Bank Field facility record in the 5000m run after finishing the race with a personal-best time of 14:39.36. On Saturday afternoon, Nicolette Kreatsoulas finished as the runner-up in the hammer throw with a record breaking toss of 58.77m on her final attempt.
Kreatsoulas and fellow senior Chad Zallow were named the Horizon League Women's Field Athlete of the Week and Men's Runner of the Week on Tuesday.
USTFCCA Regional Rankings
The men's program is ranked 13th in this week's USTFCCA Great Lakes Region rankings. YSU has been ranked as high as 11th during the outdoor season. The women jumped up two spots in this week's ranking to 18th after coming in at 20th following the opening week of compeition.
