The Youngstown State bowling team won its final four matches and posted the third-highest pinfall of the day on a strong second day the Northeast Invitational.

The Penguins totaled 4,778 pins during Saturday's five traditional matches at AMF Bristol Pike Lanes, which allowed them to move up seven spots from 14th to seventh on the final day of qualifying. Only McKendree and Vanderbilt, which claimed the top two positions in the standings, had higher pinfalls than Youngstown State.

"The ladies did a great job of staying patient and staying together," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "Shooting two sets over 1,000 to finish the day was a lot of fun, but the momentum really started to swing our way during the second match. I'm really proud of their toughness. It'll be important to get comfortable early tomorrow and keep our rhythm flowing."

The Penguins lost their opening match 895-837 to No. 23 Monmouth, but they improved their scores over each of their next four matches in posting four straight victories. Rachel Darrow threw a clean 233 in a 913-837 win over Molloy, and Emma Dockery threw three strikes in the 10th to close out a narrow 935-927 win over No. 24 Wilmington. Dockery then continued the run by throwing the front six in a 244-game as YSU beat Chestnut Hill 1,039-886, and all five bowlers scored between 189 and 224 in a 1,054-925 victory over No. 7 North Carolina A&T. That 1,054 was 61 pins higher than any other team in the field in the 10th match, and it was the third-highest match total in program history.

Nikki Mendez was YSU's top individual finisher as she totaled 1,015 for an average of 203. She reached 205 in four of her five games, and missed making the all-tournament team by 13 pins. Darrow was the next Penguin in the individual standings with a 20th-place total of 965, and Dockery was two pins back and tied for 21st. Her 244 game tied for the eighth-highest mark of the day. Emma Wrenn placed 32nd with a 938, and she averaged 197.5 over the final four games.

Youngstown State will open bracket play against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday beginning at 8:25 a.m. YSU's three matches will be streamed on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
