Catching Up With Freshman Jocelyn Fike

Incoming freshman Jocelyn Fike (Buffalo, N.Y.) gives an update as she prepares to begin her collegiate career at Youngstown State. 

When did you start playing lacrosse and why?  
I started playing lacrosse in seventh grade. I was looking for a fun sport to become a part of and my JV coach, Coach Turner asked me to play.

What made you chose YSU?
I choose YSU because when I came for my visit I instantly fell in love with the campus and could see myself being there and playing lacrosse there for the next four years. My lacrosse coaches that gave me the tour made me feel so welcomed.

What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
My plans for the rest of the summer are to enjoy my time at home with my family and friends before I leave for college. 

Have you reached out to any of your new teammates, or did you previously know anyone on the team?
I had the privilege of playing travel lacrosse with one of the girls on my YSU team, Sarah. I also had the privilege of meeting most of the girls on our fall visit. 

How anxious are you to get to campus and start your college career?
I am very anxious to get on campus. I am counting down the days to start a new chapter of my life. 

What was the lacrosse highlight of your high school/club career?
My lacrosse highlight was hitting 100-career goal my junior year of high school. 

Do you have any pets and what are their names?
I have two dogs. Their names are Thor and Loki.

What did you miss the most from your last few months of high school being cancelled?
The things I missed the most of missing my last few months of High School was not getting to play my senior session with my friends. 

What kind of activities are you doing to stay in shape?
I try to workout everyday including lifting and running to try my best to stay in shape. I also enjoy biking and rollerblading with my family. 

What are your hobbies and interests outside of playing lacrosse?
Outside of playing lacrosse I enjoy just spending time outside. 

If you weren't a lacrosse player, what sport would you like to do?
If I wasn't a lacrosse player I would have been playing tennis as my primary sport. 

Who or what has been the biggest influence or inspiration during your athletic career?
My biggest influences have been my parents. They have always pushed me to do better than I was and always believed in me. They would do whatever was possible to help me. 

Did you have a favorite athlete or team that inspired you growing up? – If so, what athlete or team and why?
Growing up I always enjoyed watching sports. Whether it was the Bills, Yankees or Sabres. It would be hard to get me away from the TV if they were on. I enjoyed the competitiveness of the sports.
